CHEVY CHASE RESIDENCE
Located in Chevy Chase, Maryland, this renovation reimagines the home’s kitchen, dining area, primary suite, and outdoor living spaces to better align with the owners’ needs for functionality, flow, and everyday comfort.
The original galley kitchen was undersized, with limited storage and fragmented counter space. A large, unprogrammed circulation zone between the kitchen and the compact dining room further reduced spatial efficiency. The primary suite, though generous in scale, was constrained by a small walk-in closet with limited natural light, while the bathroom was undersized and contained an outdated soaking tub that was no longer in use.
Design Approach
Menassa Architecture reconfigured the interior plan to improve spatial efficiency and strengthen connections between key living areas. The kitchen and family room are now positioned adjacent to one another, linked by a large opening flanked by built-in bookshelves that frame views between both spaces and reinforce their visual and functional relationship.
A new pantry was introduced between the kitchen and an enlarged dining room, accommodating the needs of a growing family while improving circulation and storage. A modest mudroom addition organizes daily entry, incorporating a built-in bench with cubbies below for shoes and bags, along with perimeter hooks for everyday outerwear.
To expand the home’s livable footprint, a new screened porch with an adjacent terrace extends the living and dining experience outdoors, offering a comfortable, year-round connection to the landscape.
Within the private areas of the home, the primary suite was reconfigured to improve storage and introduce a more functional bathroom layout, bringing clarity, comfort, and modern efficiency to the space. Throughout the renovation, light and views were carefully considered to balance openness toward the surrounding landscape with privacy in more intimate areas of the home.
